Charles Fawcett

Charles Fernley Fawcett (born December 2, 1915 in Waleska , Georgia , † February 3, 2008 in London ) was an American adventurer, soldier and actor .

Life

Fawcett, who was orphaned when he was six, grew up with aunts in South Carolina . After personal problems and years of working on steamers, he came to Washington, DC in 1937 , where a cousin was assistant to the United States Postmaster General , before moving to France that same year . He made his living as a wrestler at the time . After the beginning of the Second World War he met Varian Fry and was actively involved in saving numerous Jewish people from the persecutions of that time; u. a. He married six Jewish women within three months, enabling them to travel to the United States. After he had to leave France on the run from the Gestapo , he served in the Foreign Legion .

After Fawcett had also fought in the Greek Civil War, he began a new career as an actor in 1949 and played in over sixty films by 1968; even in the 1970s he accepted a handful of offers. During these years he lived mainly in Italy, where he was also known as the "Mayor of Via Veneto ". But he was also involved in military operations; he helped refugees from the Hungarian uprising and freed prisoners from the fighting in the Belgian Congo .

In 1980 he went to Afghanistan and made film documents about the fight of the mujahideen against the Red Army possible .

Fawcett had been April Ducksbury's partner for thirty years after the death of his first wife in 1956 when they finally married in 1991.
