In the kingdom of the silver lion is a film by Franz Josef Gottlieb based on the book In the kingdom of the silver lion III by Karl May (see also Karl May films ).

action

In the first part (“ Durchs Wilde Kurdistan ”) the evil former Machredsch of Mosul falls from a rock after a fight with Kara Ben Nemsi and is believed to be dead. But he survived the fall and seeks revenge. He wants to snatch the Chaldean treasure, which is guarded in a cave by the legendary Marah Durimeh . The Machredsch wins the bandit Abu Seif (father of the saber) as an ally . Together they kidnap the daughter of the head of the Chaldeans, Ingdscha, who is also the granddaughter of Marah Durimeh.

Kara Ben Nemsi and his friends want to cross the great salt lake, but Machredsch shoots their guide. Kara's shepherd dog Dojan is able to lead her out of the lake after long torments.

In front of the Padishah, Machredsch succeeds in presenting himself in the best possible light and slandering Kara Ben Nemsi. The recently rescued Kara is promptly captured by the Padishah's soldiers and has to fight for his life in a "judgment of God". After he has succeeded in this, he is reinstated in his old rights by the Padischah and the Machredsch is again considered the "villain".

The bandits have now penetrated the Chaldeans and only Ahmed El Corda, with Hajji Halef Omar and the warriors from the Haddedihn tribe, can repel the attack. Abu Seif is killed by Ahmed in a duel. The Machredsch continues to besiege the mountain and demands the surrender of all dogs and cats. He sends them back to the Chaldeans as living torches during the night while his people attack again. Marah Durimeh is killed and the fate of the besieged seems sealed.

But Kara Ben Nemsi and Hajji Halef Omar lead the Haddedihn warriors into the rear of the bandits and manage to rub them off. The Machredsch flees, pursued by Kara Ben Nemsi. The two of them fight for the last time in a gondola that leads over a ravine. Machredsch finally falls into the ravine and is finally dead. The Chaldeans and their treasure are saved and Ahmed El Corda can embrace his beloved Ingdscha again.

background

The world premiere took place on December 31, 1965 in “City”, Bremen . The premiere date is curious. According to the contract, the film had to be shown in 1965, and so it came to a rather unnoticed world premiere on the last possible date in the small “City” in Bremen. The real big premiere took place on February 18, 1966 in the other cinemas in Germany.

The film is the sequel to " Durchs Wilde Kurdistan ", but has nothing to do with the original novel by Karl May (and does not appear in the first six oriental novels, as a sequel to "Durchs Wilde Kurdistan" would suggest).

The two film adaptations led to a legal battle between Lex Barker and the producer Artur Brauner. The original plan was to film the story in only one part, and Barker now demanded an additional payment of his fee of 100,000 DM. He won the trial.

Brauner had another legal dispute with director Gottlieb after he had resigned from him on June 16, 1965. The arguments ended in 1968 with a settlement.

Reviews

Marie Versini played Ingdscha

“Your heart bleeds when you see a lady with old make-up with a gray ball hairstyle, who utters sadly flat phrases. That should be Marah Durimeh ... "

- Kronen Zeitung , January 21, 1966

“The Karl May wave is moving further and further away from its origin. Only the undemanding viewer will be able to enjoy the colorful mess. It's amazing how much the director misses tone and style, how badly he leads the actors. In this way, the appeal of the Karl May films to the audience will quickly wane. "

- film service , February 9, 1966

"Abundant arbitrary use of Karl May's characters in a harsh plot that is of no use to anyone and annoys supporters of the writer."

- Protestant film observer , March 5, 1966

"As the daughter of the head of the Chaldeans, the French Marie Versini is such a delightful prisoner that the fight for her is worthwhile for everyone involved."

- Hamburger Morgenpost , June 1, 1966

"The Kurdish adventures that are served here from routine cinematic pots are just as desolate as the salt marshes and the pale desert in which people win, love and suffer."

"Desert kitsch."

- Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz in the Lexicon Films on TV , 1990

“The critics didn't agree on whether the film was any good. Some found the film outrageous and unimaginative, others particularly praised the death ride over a salt lake filmed in "poetic, almost elegiac images". "

- Der Spiegel , June 15, 1998

"Tolerably entertaining, formally as well as content-wise but equally undemanding adaptation of Karl May novels, neither believable nor exciting."
