Karl May's works

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl May's works , the historically critical edition for the Karl May Foundation , or HKA for short , have been published since 1987. In addition to citable texts, the “editorial reports”, which are at the end of a volume or, in the case of some multi-part sections, in the last volume , the history of origin and variants. This is an edition of Karl May's texts that is necessary for research .

Edition history

The historical-critical edition was originally conceived in 99 volumes and was published by Hermann Wiedenroth and Hans Wollschläger from 1987 to 1988 by Greno Verlag , Nördlingen. After moving to Haffmans Verlag , Zurich, from 1990–1992 , the volumes were self-published by Hermann Wiedenroth in the Buchhaus , Bargfeld, from 1993 onwards . In 1998 Hans Wollschläger resigned as co-editor. By 2007, 55 volumes had been published. With the signing of the contract on May 29, 2007, the next innovation took place: The Karl-May-Gesellschaft takes over the publication with Joachim Biermann as managing editor and the Karl-May-Verlag produces the books which the Karl-May-Stiftung and the Karl -May Museum . In addition, the edition plan was changed. The first volume from this collaboration was published in 2008.

The editors of the "editorial reports" often face the problem of missing or incomplete texts. For a long time the manuscripts of the Karl-May-Verlag could not be used. In addition, parts of first editions or later editions are (still) missing, so that calls are made again and again in which owners of May texts are asked to make them available.

Haffmans Verlag published several paperback editions based on the HKA texts . Under his license, Karl May's main works were published in 1992 by Parkland Verlag , Stuttgart as the “Zurich Edition” and Haffmans himself in 1996 as the “Zurich Edition”. The texts appeared on CD-ROM as volume 77 of the digital library .
