Präriejäger in Mexico is a two-part television film made by GDR television from 1988 , made in the DEFA studio for feature films, based on the novel by Karl May . For the film adaptation, motifs from the novels Benito Juarez and Trapper Vulture's Beak from the romance cycle Das Waldröschen were used. In parts, the plot is identical to the West German Karl May movie " The Pyramid of the Sun God " (1965). The first part, " Benito Juarez ", was broadcast on December 25, 1988 and the second part, " Vulture's Beak ", on December 28, 1988 in the first program of GDR television.

action

In Mexico in 1865, the rule of the French Emperor Napoléon III. Austrian Archduke Maximilian appointed as emperor against the will of the people who elected Benito Juárez as its president.

On his side, the Black Gerard , the chief of the Mixtecas Indians, Bear's Eye and the famous trapper Vulture's Beak fight against the French. You can prevent an arms transport from falling to the bandit Pablo Cortejo , who, together with his daughter Josefa , wants to usurp the power of President Juarez.

Little André , who also sympathizes with Juarez , also has his headquarters in the small pub owned by the landlord Pirnero , who is constantly on the lookout for marriage candidates for his daughter Residella . André gets the order from him to contact the spy Emilia after the black Gerard almost fell into the hands of the French.

When the bandit Cortejo attacks the Hacienda del Eriña , Gerard rushes to help. On the run, Cortejo falls into the hands of the Mixtecas Indians, but is rescued by his friend Porter . An attack by the two on the pub in Pirnero also goes wrong. Black Gerard is again on time. A profile is issued on Cortejo's head. When he sees this, a world collapses for him and he commits suicide. After President Juarez expelled the French, the black man Gerard also embraces Pirnero's daughter Residella for a "happy ending".

criticism

The story fit ideologically into the concept of the “liberation struggle of the oppressed people against imperialist powers”. However, only the film music by Karl-Ernst Sasse was convincing. After bad reviews, DEFA refrained from further Karl May films.
