action

The released Old Wabble seeks revenge and allies himself with the Osagen . Winnetou and Old Shatterhand are able to prevent the planned raids and also free Apanatschka , who was captured by the Osagen. Old Wabble and Schahko Matto, the chief of the Osagen, are caught. They can make peace with Shahko Matto, but Old Wabble remains unforgiving.

A little later, there is another attack on Old Shatterhand on Harbors Farm, which, however, is again mild. The assassin is the Comanche medicine man , Tibo-taka, the alleged father of Apanachka, who has apparently allied himself with General Douglas.

Shahko Matto remembers that years ago he met a Lothaire Thibaut, who was a vicious cheater and thief. It turns out that Lothaire Thibaut and Tibo-taka are identical and that this cannot possibly be Apanachka's father. Shahko Matto declares that he will join the group of persecutors because he too still has an unresolved account with the general.

On the further way, the companions of Tramps under the leadership of Old Wabble are ambushed and captured. Kolma Puschi , a mysterious Indian whom they had met shortly before, is able to free them. But they do not get far because they now meet Toby Spencer and his gang, with Old Shatterhand being injured. In the general turmoil around a forge, the Spencer gang is arrested and Spencer is permanently checkmated even in a duel .

Now the friends are finally making good progress and come across Old Surehand in “Bärental” . However, he is a prisoner of Utah's only released under the chief Tusahga Saritsch and should, if he kills four bears and the chief brings the skins. Of course he gets help with this task and he succeeds. Together they ride on to the "Mountain of Green Water" (Pah-sawehre-payew). There the general has allied himself with the Utahs and ambushed Old Wabble with his tramps. The tramps are all dead and Old Wabble is dying. He regrets his misdeeds and Old Shatterhand prays for him.

Kolma Puschi reappears in the Rocky Mountains . Old Shatterhand solves the mystery of Old Surehand's past - and it turns out that Kolma Puschi is a woman and the mother of Surehand and Apanatschka. Tibo-wete-elen was originally called Tokbela and is her sister. General Douglas himself is the wanted Dan Etters, who brought the misery over the family.

In the duel, Thibaut is shot by Schahko Matto and the general falls into the depths while fleeing and dies in agony.
