In the far west
In the Far West is both the title of a May story and the title of May's first book edition, in which this text was published together with a text by Karl Friedrich von Wickede . It belongs to the series of early adventure stories by Karl May .

In 1879 Karl May reworked the story Old Firehand, which had already appeared in the German Family Gazette, for publication in a book for young people.
May made the boy Harry out of the young girl Ellen, with whom the first-person narrator (not yet Old Shatterhand ) falls in love. However, May was unable to eradicate all references to the love story, which is why the edited version looks a bit strange in places.
In 1893 May worked this text (and not the first version Old Firehand ) into the book edition of Winnetou II .
The first book edition
The edited version was titled In the Far West and was included in the volume In the Far West. Two stories from Indian life for the youth by Carl May and Fr. C. von Wickede, published in 1879 by Franz Neugebauer as the first official book edition of a May text.
In 1885 - without May's knowledge - an "improved" second edition appeared.
From 1889 the book was published under the title Jenseits der Felsengebirge by Robert Bardtenschlager, who had taken over the Franz Neugebauer publishing house.
