from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Der Ölprinz (spelling until 1905: Der Oelprinz ) is a story by Karl May that hewrotefor the magazine Der Gute Kamerad from August 1892 to early 1893 , in which it wasfirst publishedfrom October 1893 to September 1894 .

The story of the same name, The Oelprinz , which appeared in 1878, is not a forerunner of this famous youth story .

content

There are three storylines that come together as the story progresses.

A group of German emigrants is said to be robbed by the Finders, a notorious gang. Sam Hawkens , Dick Stone and Will Parker find out about this and offer to help. They continue to lead the emigrants while the Finders are trapped at the end of the first chapter.

The rogue leader of the trek, Poller, frees the leader of the Finders. Together they meet at Forner's Rancho on Grinley, Buttler's half-brother, who wants to turn on an alleged oil well for the banker Rollins and then cheat him out of the money.

Hobble-Frank and Aunt Droll are suspicious and want to prevent that.

The villain trio sets a trap for their opponents and so the “clover leaf”, Frank and Droll as well as the emigrants from Nijoras are captured. Grindley, Buttler, Poller, the banker Rollins and his accountant ride on.

While the banker and his accountant are being brought to the oil well by Grinley and his brother, they come into the warring Indian tribes of the Nijoras and Navajos. A game of mutual capture and betrayal begins.

However, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand arrive in time to free the prisoners, save the banker, and reconcile the Indians.

Later editions

An edited version of the text can be found in Volume 37 of the Collected Works , Der Ölprinz .

In March 2009 a philologically secured text was published as Volume III.6 of the Historisch-Kritischen Ausgabe (HKA) in Karl May Verlag , edited by Florian Schleburg and Ruprecht Gammler. The text is based on the magazine version, since, as stated in the editorial report, May's involvement in the book editions can be practically excluded. All text versions of the book editions published during May's lifetime are listed in the editorial report. The beginning of work on the Oil Prince is tentatively predated to April 1892.

Current editions can be found in the book database of the Freundeskreis Karl May Leipzig .
