Karl May & Co. - The Karl May Magazine ( own spelling : KARL MAY & Co. ) is a quarterly German-language magazine devoted to all topics related to the German writer Karl May and aimed at anyone interested in Karl May .

history

The magazine (today mostly 92 pages long) has existed since November 1984, but was still called the Karl May Circular Letter and, as a fanzine, consisted of a few copied, stapled copies. Since then, the Karl May magazine , which is still a leisure project and is designed by Karl May fans, has developed under various publishers and editorial teams into an extensive, generously designed printed booklet (today in perfect binding and in full color) . There are now more than 145 issues.

In May 2009 the magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary in the wine cellar of Schloss Wackerbarth in Radebeul with a Karl May reading given by actors and speakers Konrad Halver , Jean-Marc Birkholz , Olaf Hörbe and Frank Wieczorek . At the end of the jubilee year, Karl May & Co. published a 132-page jubilee issue , which was until then the largest issue in the history of the magazine. The magazine's 30th birthday was celebrated again in Radebeul in 2014.

editor

Karl May & Co. is published and distributed by Mescalero e. V., a non-profit association founded in 1994 with headquarters in Borod / Westerwald , in which Karl May enthusiasts from all over Germany, including journalists, designers and media scientists, have come together to make the publication of the magazine possible on a permanent basis.

Main topics and meaning

The main topics are Karl May's life and work as well as the diverse reception. Contributions about Karl May material on the stage (see the numerous Karl May Festival in German-speaking countries), in the film (including the popular Karl May films of the 1960s with Pierre Brice and Lex Barker ) are of particular importance. as well as on sound carriers and storage media such as DVD.

With this multi-thematic concept in connection with an elaborate, professional magazine design (generous, attractive layouts have been a trademark of Karl May & Co. for decades ), the Karl May magazine is currently unrivaled. The readership of Karl May & Co. is - according to the thematic diversity - inhomogeneous in terms of age and interests.

The images and texts are almost all original contributions. The importance of the thoroughly researched articles, which often also present real new discoveries, is now also recognized by Karl May research. Various standard works such as the year books of the Karl May Society , the “Karl May Chronik” (5 vol. From the Karl May Verlag ), “Briefwechsel mit Friedrich Ernst Fehsenfeld” (2 vol., 2007 also in the Karl May publishing house ) May-Verlag published) or "Karl Mays 'Winnetou', Karl-May-Studien Vol. 10" ( Igel Verlag Wissenschaft) meanwhile refer to the magazine.

New publications - whether books or sound carriers (e.g. the numerous newly published radio plays ) - are mostly reviewed in detail in Karl May & Co. Interviews - for example with personalities such as Götz Alsmann , Roger Willemsen , Jürgen von der Lippe , Rainald Grebe , Konrad Halver , Gerd Haffmans , Griseldis Wenner and Dietmar Mues - are published regularly .
