Acquittal for Old Shatterhand is a 1965 television film by ZDF with the subtitle A documentary about the trial of Karl May against Rudolf Lebius .
This “semi-documentary” film deals with the trial before the Berlin-Charlottenburg jury on April 12, 1910, when Karl May sued his opponent Rudolf Lebius for insult. Lebius had called him a "born criminal".
Film plot
Lebius brings evidence of May's criminal record during the trial. In flashbacks, May remembers his time in the workhouse and penitentiary and the various crimes with his friend Priegel.
May's lawyer and May himself try to show the "other side": to clarify the causes and psychological reasons that made him a criminal. And they prove that May is purified. May's fantasies in the form of film excerpts from the Karl May films with Lex Barker and Pierre Brice are included .
Scriptwriter's Sources
Hellmut Kotschenreuther used the volume "Ich" , Ludwig Gurlitt's Justice for Karl May! , Arno Schmidt's Sitara and the way there , Paul Schweder's The Great Criminal Trials of the Century and SPIEGEL (cover story Karl the German ) and Rudolf Lebius' Die Zeugen Karl May and Klara May .
The use of the latter work also makes the depiction of the “robber pistols” extremely implausible. May was able to prove that these rip-offs were invented by Louis Krügel (called "Priegel" in the film).
