On the Rubble of Paradise is a German silent film by Josef Stein from 1920. It is based on the chapter The Raid from the novel Von Bagdad nach Stambul by Karl May . Its world premiere took place on October 7, 1920 in the Kammer-Lichtspiele in Dresden .

action

Kara Ben Nemsi rushes to the aid of a Persian travel company attacked by Kurds. This is the external framework narrated by one of the saved. Interwoven with this is a dream that Kara Ben Nemsi has. In it, Marah Durimeh lets him look back through a mystical crystal to the early days of the Muslim religion.

Remarks

Producer Marie Luise Droop knew Karl May personally. She ran with her husband Dr. Adolf Droop formed the Karl May Association from 1913 to 1915 after May's death. She managed to get Karl May's widow, Klara May , excited about a film adaptation. For this purpose she founded “Ustad-Film” in 1920 ( Ustad is a character from the Karl May tetralogy of the same name).

The film was announced as “a picture from distant zones in 6 acts” and was actually shot as the second in a small series of Karl May films from Ustad-Film, but was shown first. The premiere took place in Dresden as a tribute to Karl May . Klara May was present at the performance.

The film was not a commercial success. No copies of the film can currently be found. It is therefore considered lost .
