content

In the three films, the friendship of the German immigrant Karl May alias Old Shatterhand and the Apache chief Winnetou is told as an adventure in America's Wild West.

Part 1: Winnetou - A New World

The Central Pacific Railroad Company built a railroad line to the American West in the 1860s . The German engineer Karl May carries out surveying work in the Indian area with the foreman Rattler and some of his men. When the latter desecrated a burial site, two of them were killed by Apache arrows and May was badly wounded. The others flee and leave May behind. When the chief's son Winnetou tries to scalp him, the club boxer jumps up again and hits Winnetou to the ground with his fist. May is taken to the Indian camp on a travois , where he is nursed back to health by the shaman , Winnetou's sister Nscho-chi, and called Old Shatterhand because of his light hair and his punch. May initiates a contract between James Bancroft, the construction manager, and the Apache chief Intschu tschuna to run the route around the Indian territory; but in the working-class town of Roswell Intschu tschuna is shot dead by Rattler during the deal. The nocturnal retaliatory attack by Winnetou and his warriors ends with a machine gun brought by Rattler in a slaughter of the Indians, which May has to overhear while the workers are tied up. When the wounded Indians are shot the next morning, the released May saves the new chief Winnetou and brings him to his tribe. Old Shatterhand drafts a plan for the Indians to blow up a railway bridge, which is too time-consuming to rebuild, and to have a new line built around the Indian area. The demolition succeeds in the presence of a press representative, Rattler is killed and James Bancroft's career is over.

Part 2: Winnetou - The Secret of the Silver Lake

Based on the notes of Alexander von Humboldt , a professor of ethnology traveled to the Wild West to find a treasure hidden from Cortés . Due to gambling debts with the bandit El Mas Loco, he has to reveal the secret and accompany him and his gang, who attack the village of Winnetou and force the shaman to lead them to the Silver Lake. Upon arrival, the gang leader shoots the professor.

Old Shatterhand had previously turned down Nscho-chi's Nscho-chi marriage proposal and accepted an engineering job for high-rise construction in Santa Fe . Back in white civilization, he encounters racist prejudice against the Indians. When Sam Hawkens and an Indian boy bring him the news of the attack, he immediately returns with them to the prairie and frees the tribe from being guarded by four of the Mexicans. He takes up the chase with Winnetou and Sam Hawkens. At the Silbersee they watch how El Mas Loco in Nscho-chi thinks he recognizes his former great love Carmen.

An attempt to free Nscho-chi fails. Shatterhand and Winnetou are captured by the bandits, and Sam Hawkens, who was supposedly shot by them, returns to the Apache camp to get help. In a wooden barrel used as a diving bell , the two have to look for the treasure at the bottom of the lake, but without success. When Nscho-chi recites the legend again , the two of them dive on the cliff and find an underwater entrance to the mountain. With the Mexicans they penetrate into a cave with a statue of the being Cthulhu and a pot of gold. While the bandits are fighting over the gold, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand knock down their guard and use his weapons to take out the chasing Mexicans as far as El Mas Loco on the way back through the mountain. Shatterhand blocks this from the exit by causing a rock fall. The Mexican, buried alive, shoots himself. Outside the cave, the Apaches, together with Hawkens, killed the remaining gangsters and are waiting for the three of their own. Hawkens dreams of digging himself into the cave to get the gold, but falls on deaf ears. The gold, which only brought bad luck, should remain untouched. Back at the camp, Old Shatterhand Nscho-chi proposes marriage in the European tradition and kneels in front of her. This says "yes".

Part 3: Winnetou - The Last Fight

The easy-going Santer jr. is supposed to take an office job at his influential father's company in Los Angeles , but prefers to stay there for a while after a train stop in Roswell. He notices traces of oil after Shatterhand and Winnetou bought dynamite from Belle and Sam Hakwens' store. He rides after them and watches how the blood brothers and Nscho-chi use them to extinguish a burning oil well they came across while digging a well. After his father does not want to transfer any money for the intended land purchase, he tries his hand at gambling and loses all of his belongings to a card player. He strangles him after leaving the saloon . With the stolen money he tries in vain to buy the land. Back in Roswell, he is arrested by the sheriff for the murder, bribed him and forged a plot with him, whose brother is the chief district judge. Then he recruited a number of unscrupulous men.

Shatterhand and Nscho-chi built a barn on the Apache country after a wooden house. While they are waiting for three Polish carpenters, they hear three shots and find traces of blood. When the blood brothers, Nscho-chi and four other Apaches ride to Roswell to clarify the fate of the men, their corpses, prepared with arrows, are presented to them. The riders are overwhelmed and imprisoned, Nscho-chi finds shelter in the shop unnoticed. The jury of a scheduled trial find bundles of money in their seats, the district judge sentenced those arrested to death by hanging and expropriated the land of the Apaches.

Disguised as an undertaker, Sam Hawkens drives a wagon and the veiled shaman to the place of execution. However, the coffin on the wagon is full of dynamite sticks, with a torch held over it, Nscho-chi, ready to die, forces the condemned to be released. Santer sr. buys the Apache land and puts a bounty on all Apaches. The Apaches flee into a mountain cave. Winnetou and Shatterhand let themselves be captured by the Komantschen and Winnetou defeated their chief in a duel in order to be able to talk to him and the chiefs of other tribes about a common approach to the land grab. But because the other chiefs are unwilling to do so, the blood brothers return to the cave.

There the shaman calls up a vision in which she sees the Apaches victorious despite being outnumbered in a fight, but Winnetou dead. This is how it happens: After the Apaches, which the Kiowas joined, attack the oil production system , Shatterhand, Winnetou, Nscho-chi as well as Sam Hawkens, Belle and two Apaches are fit to fight and are locked in the couple's wooden house set on fire. Finally the warriors of the other tribes come to the rescue. However, Winnetou, who had thrown himself protectively in front of Shatterhand, is ambushed by Santer Jr. shot.

Santer jr. is captured and has to sign a confession of his murder of the Poles. Shatterhand trades with the threat of otherwise having it published, Santer Jr. against the land restitution and compensation from his father and keeps the confession for security. A brother of the card player appears in his office in Los Angeles and shoots the killer. Shatterhand is chosen as the new chief by the Apaches. Because of the blood brotherhood , Nscho-chi answers the question of the Comanche chief whether there is chief blood in his veins with "Yes".

production

There are film adaptations freely based on the stories Winnetou I , The Treasure in Silbersee and Winnetou III . The film version deviates massively from Karl May's novel. After a legal dispute with the Karl-May-Verlag , which relied on title protection , the films were renamed Winnetou - A New World , Winnetou - The Secret of Silver Lake and Winnetou - The Last Battle . Originally, the titles of the three new Winnetou films should be Winnetou and Old Shatterhand , Winnetou and the treasure in Silbersee and Winnetou's death .

The three-part film adaptation of Karl Mays Winnetou took place under the production management of Christian Becker and Christoph Müller from RatPack Filmproductions, co-producers are Matthias Wendlandt and Felix Wendlandt with Rialto Film and Marcus Englert, Mythos Film. Jan Mojtos Beta Film sells the films abroad as an international partner.

The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the Croatian funding HAVC (Croatian Audiovisual Center) funded the film project.

Shooting began in August 2015. The films were shot in locations in Croatia , where the Karl May films of the 1960s with Pierre Brice and Lex Barker were made, and in North Rhine-Westphalia . Filming locations were Lika , Gorski , Velebit , Istria , Fužine and the Paklenica National Park . Further recordings were made in the landscape of the Krka National Park and at the Zrmanja Canyon.

The budget was ten million euros for 81 days of shooting and 220 employees (including 76 actors) and 4000 extras .

Film music

The soundtrack comes from the composer Heiko Maile , who was able to partially fall back on Martin Böttcher's well-known Winnetou theme from the 1960s films.

reception

Reviews

Sidney Schering, quotenmeter.de, said: “The Winnetou three-parter is sometimes told a little exuberantly, but visually far above the average level of German TV productions and changes the popular Karl May heroes in a contemporary way. The result is exciting western adventure entertainment with dramatic passages, which rightly positioned itself as a Christmas TV event. ”The Stuttgarter Zeitung praised the fact that the director and script offered a version“ which in terms of dramaturgy, narrative attitude and aesthetics is in line with today's viewing habits adapted ”and that the romanticism mixed a lot of realism in the portrayal of the living conditions of the whites as well as the Indians,“ to whom bitter injustice is being done through the expansion of the settlers and their racism ”. The action scenes, which lack the polish, are less successful and some dialogues have "the simplest pre-evening series level".
