Philipp Stölzl (* 1967 in Munich ) is a German director. He directs feature films, commercials, music videos and operas.

Life

Beginnings

Philipp Stölzl is the son of the historian and Christian Democratic politician Christoph Stölzl . Philipp Stölzl completed an apprenticeship as a set designer at the Münchner Kammerspiele and began as an assistant to Jürgen Rose and Ezio Toffolutti . He initially worked as a set and costume designer at German theaters until 1996 and worked a. a. with directors such as Thomas Langhoff and Armin Petras . With Petras and Rio Reiser he brought out the rock musical Knock out Germany at the Chemnitz Theater in 1994 , on which he had also worked as a co-author.

Movie

In 1997 he shot his first music video, Rammstein's Du Hast , which made him a sought-after director.

Stölzl shot the music videos Bring me to life , Going Under and Everybody's fool to the songs of Evanescence . For the clip of Stripped by the band Rammstein, he used images from the film Olympia - Fest der Völker by Leni Riefenstahl from 1938. He also shot for Madonna American Pie and for the title track of the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough Of Garbage . Stölzl has been in advertising since 2000 and has shot spots for brands such as BMW, Nokia, Rolex and Sony. Stölzl has been making music videos for Katapult Filmproduktion since 2004 .

His first feature film was Baby in 2002 . In 2008 his second feature film started, the mountain adventure north face with Benno Fürmann , Johanna Wokalek , Florian Lukas and Ulrich Tukur in the leading roles. The world premiere took place at the Locarno International Film Festival , the German premiere at the Hamburg Film Festival . Nordwand was awarded the German Film Prize in the categories Best Image Design and Best Sound Design 2009.

In 2010, Stölzl's third feature film, Goethe! , in German cinemas, which tells the genesis of Goethe's Werther with an autobiographical love story of the young poet with Charlotte Buff , later Kestner. Goethe! was awarded the German Film Prize in the category Best Make-up Image 2011.

In 2013 Stölzl took over the direction of the film Der Medicus , which was shot by Noah Gordon based on the book of the same name .

In 2015 he directed the three-part television film Winnetou - The Mythos Lives for RTL , which is roughly based on the novels by Karl May .

Music and spoken theater

Stölzl also staged at the music and spoken theater. In 2005 his version of Carl Maria von Weber's Freischütz premiered at the Meiningen State Theater . In 2007 Stölzl staged the Berlioz opera Benvenuto Cellini at the Salzburg Festival . In 2010 he staged Johann Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus at the Stuttgart State Opera . In 2014 Stölzl staged his first play, Frankenstein based on the novel of the same name by Mary Shelley , at Theater Basel . In 2019 Stölzl staged Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto at the Bregenz Festival and received a lot of media attention, including a. by recording and broadcasting the opera on ZDF .

Stölzl has three children and lives in Berlin.
