action

Paul and Frank's wives die in a traffic accident in the Netherlands , and they move in together. The two of them raise Lilli, Frank's daughter, together. The men earn their living as petty criminals , among other things , but one day it ends in a debacle when they are discovered by a security guard. In a panic, they shoot him.

Lilli later brings home a young man named Tommy, whom Frank throws out of the apartment because of his black skin. The offended daughter then decides to take revenge on her father and begins a relationship with his friend Paul. After Lilli becomes pregnant, Frank kills Tommy, who he thinks is the father of his grandson, but Paul appears to be this father. Frank is arrested and convicted, while Paul and Lilli flee Frank to the Dutch island of Texel , but Frank later pursues them.

reception

Carsten Baumgardt wrote on FILMSTARTS.de that Baby was a “remarkable cinema debut” in which Stölzl managed to portray the characters in a balanced enough way. He also credited the director for not derailing the "unusual story" . Stölzl made it possible to give the "white trash figures" enough freedom of action to be able to develop freely. In spite of his numerous negative qualities, the figure of Frank has received some “conciliatory traits” and Paul, who tends to get morally sidelined due to his relationship with Lilli, can be said to be fundamentally good. Baumgardt considered this a "rare masterpiece" .

“The NDR cinema production“ Baby ”has almost everything that makes a good German film. A solid script, very good actors and a good atmosphere. "
