Gerhard Schmidt (producer)

Gerhard Schmidt (full name: Gerhard Ernst Schmidt) (born January 7, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German film producer , screenwriter and director .

Live and act

Gerhard Schmidt studied law , oriental languages and sociology in Bonn and Cologne . He and Hansjürgen Hilgert took part in the Bonn stage for sensual perception . The films they produced together, Escape and Dawn , were given the title “Valuable”.

In 1964, Schmidt and Hilgert received, in collaboration with Gerd Hergen Lübben and Georg Müller-Egert for their third short film, From the life of Georg Wenzel , as part of the Mannheimer XIII. International Film Week the Federal Film Award.

Gerhard Schmidt founded various film productions such as the Gerhard Schmidt Scripts & Films Produktion (Cologne) as well as the Producers' Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German Academy for Television . He ran a production company founded in 1962 from 1964 together with Hans Hermann Köper under the name Köper + Schmidt, books and films . After Köper's death in 1977 he continued to run the company on his own before founding Cologne (for German-language programs) and Gemini (for international programs and cinema projects) together with his wife Micha Terjung in 1988.

Schmidt was also active as a journalist. Together with the later WDR radio director Wolfgang Schmitz, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Underground, which was launched in 1968 by the publishing duo Bärmeier & Nikel . In 1974 he and Köper published two Robinzak books in addition to the youth program of the same name in the afternoon program of ZDF, of which they were also authors.

Gerhard Schmidt is also committed to media policy issues in North Rhine-Westphalia.
