Wolfgang Schmitz (journalist)

Wolfgang Schmitz (born August 29, 1948 in Solingen-Ohligs ) is a German journalist and editor .

Life

Wolfgang Schmitz worked from 1968 to 1970 as a reporter and editor of the youth magazine Underground at the publishing house Bärmeier & Nikel and in 1970 came to WDR television as a freelance author and presenter. There he worked for the youth programs Baff , Klatschmohn and Rhinozeros . He realized film projects for WDR, ZDF and the World Food Organization FAO and undertook extensive reporting trips through Africa. In November 1977 he was permanently employed as an editor in the radio program area for culture. From 1988 Schmitz headed the editorial group Family and Society, then became the head of this program group in 1992. In 1997 he was appointed head of the radio wave WDR 5 program . In August 2002 Schmitz also became deputy to the radio director Monika Piel . On January 22, 2007, the Broadcasting Council elected him as the new radio director. Schmitz held this office until the end of April 2014. In 2011 and 2012 Schmitz took over the chairmanship of the committee of radio directors of ARD .

Schmitz is also a member of the German Committee for UNICEF .

Wolfgang Schmitz lives in Cologne. He is married to Dorothee Schmitz and has five children.
