My Friend Joe ( English title: My Friend Joe ) is a 1996 film directed by Chris Bould and starring Schuyler Fisk and John Cleere . The film is loosely based on the novel Jan, mein Freund which was written in 1985 by the Swedish author Peter Pohl .

Because he has refused a test of courage, Chris is teased by his comrades. Then one day the courageous Joe appears, who puts Chris's comrades in the shade. Chris gets on well with him right away. But it soon turns out that Joe is actually a girl named Joanne who works as a tightrope artist in a traveling circus. Joe is forced to dress and behave like a boy by her uncle Curt. The friendship of the two is put to a severe test.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films judges my friend Joe as sensitive and "told as exciting as it is complex". Also Cinema uses the word "sensitive" and adds that the children's book adaptation prefer "adults under her spell." The criticism comes to the conclusion "Exciting and sensitive film about friendship". The jury of the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) found "the differentiated portrayal of puberty conflicts" to be extremely successful and was convinced of the "calm narrative style" and the "psychological deepening of the story of the uncle who had become angry" .

Awards

Awarded the best film at the 1996 Berlinale Children's Film Festival. The film was also given the rating of particularly valuable by the German film and media rating .
