John W. Foam

John Wesley Schaum (born January 27, 1905 in Milwaukee ; died July 18, 1988 there ) was an American pianist , composer and piano teacher .

life and work

He published several piano schools and series of educational piano works. There are numerous arrangements by him.

Schaum studied at Milwaukee State Teachers College at Marquette University - the Catholic Jesuit University in Milwaukee - and received his Bachelor of Music there in 1931. He then studied at Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois) and received his Master of Music in 1934.

In his hometown he founded a piano school and published numerous piano tutorials, also for adults. He also worked as a music teacher in various public schools.

His three-volume collection of pieces, Rhythm & Blues for Piano (Bosworth), is considered a classic in piano education. It contains small, easily set pieces (with increasing difficulty in volume), with an emphasis on rhythm and syncopation .

Countless works have been arranged by him, some of them worked in an appealing way, including many occasional jobs.
