Joel Gray
Joel Gray , actually Joel David Katz , (born April 11, 1932 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American actor and singer . His best-known role is that of the emcee in the musical Cabaret , for which he won both a Tony Award and an Oscar .
Life
Joel Gray was born the son of the Jewish comedian Mickey Katz and appeared on stage for the first time at the age of ten. In 1952 he made his film debut with a supporting role in the film musical About Face alongside Eddie Bracken . However, Gray experienced his breakthrough on Broadway , where he played in numerous productions from the 1950s.
He became famous for the role of the emcee in the musical Cabaret , which premiered in 1966. Gray first played this role on Broadway under the direction of Harold Prince and received the Tony Award for it . He then played the eccentric emcee in the film of the same name by Bob Fosse on the side of Liza Minnelli , for which he in turn won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. This makes Gray one of the eight actors who managed to win a Tony Award as well as an Oscar for the same role.
Joel Gray then worked as a supporting actor in numerous television series and movies, including in Herbert Ross ' crime comedy No Coke for Sherlock Holmes in 1976 , as a Korean combat champion in the action film Remo - Unarmed and Dangerous, and in 1991 in Steven Soderbergh's Kafka biography Kafka . In 2000, Gray was one next to the pop singer Bjork and Catherine Deneuve to the international ensemble cast of Lars von Trier's film Dancer in the Dark , which at the Film Festival in Cannes , the Palme d'Or was awarded. More recently, he has mainly guest roles in some of the most popular US television series. He had his most distinctive television appearance in 1991, when he played the devil in the last episode of the television series Dallas .
In addition to his film and television appearances, Joel Gray continued to be mainly connected to the theater. He played the lead role of George M. Cohan in the world premiere of the Broadway musical George M! which earned him another Tony Award nomination. In 2003 he played the Wizard of Oz in the hit musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz at the side of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth . He also played Amos Hart in Chicago , Joey Evans in Pal Joey and Moonface Martin in Anything Goes .
Joel Gray was married to actress Jo Wilder from 1958 to 1982 . The couple have two children, chef James Katz and actress Jennifer Gray . In January 2015 , the 82-year-old actor came out as homosexual in an interview with US magazine People .
