Idina Menzel (* the thirtieth May 1971 in Manhattan / New York as Idina Kim Mentzel ) is an American musical actress and film actress . She gained international fame through her engagement as "Elphaba" in the original cast of the Broadway production of the musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz . Furthermore, she became known especially with the children through the song Let It Go (original, in German Lass Jetzt Los ) from the Disney film The Ice Queen - Totally Unabashedly known, in which she lends her voice to the Ice Queen Elsa.

Life

Idina Menzel grew up on Long Island as the daughter of Helene and Stuart Mentzel and the older sister of Cara Mentzel . The fact that she spells her last name differently from that of her parents (without the "t") results from the fact that she wanted to avoid the incorrect pronunciation of her name.

She received an education at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . Although she started her education in music, she later switched to acting. In 1996 she made her Broadway debut as "Maureen" in the musical Rent .

In January 2003 Idina Menzel married the musical and film actor Taye Diggs , whom she met during the workshop production of Rent . Their son was born on September 2, 2009. At the end of 2013 it was reported that Idina Menzel broke up with Taye Diggs. They both share joint custody of their son and continue to be on friendly terms.

She has been with the former American musical and film actor Aaron Lohr since the end of 2014. The two bought in the summer of 2015 a house in Encinco ( Los Angeles ), where they live together ever since. In late September 2016, the couple announced their engagement. They married a year later.

Career

In 1995 Menzel successfully participated in an audition for the musical Rent . The role in this musical was her first professional theater engagement and at the same time her debut on Broadway . Rent premiered on January 26, 1996 on Off-Broadway in the “New York Theater Workshop”, and soon afterwards the play moved to the famous “Nederlander Theater” on Broadway due to its increasing popularity. For her portrayal of Maureen Johnson in the original line-up of the musical, Menzel was nominated for a Tony Award in the category "Best Featured Actress in a Musical". Menzel made her last appearance as Maureen Johnson on July 1, 1997.

After her success in Rent , Idina Menzel released her first solo album entitled Still I Can't Be Still . She also appeared in other roles, including Dorothy in the musical Summer of '42 at the Godspeed Opera House in Connecticut, as Sheila in the New York City Center Encores! Production of Hair and finally back on Broadway as Amneris in Aida.

2003 followed another engagement on Broadway. At the side of her colleague Kristin Chenoweth , she played Elphaba , one of the leading roles in the musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz . In 2004 Menzel received the Tony Award in the category Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Elphaba .

After Menzel had left Wicked - The Witches of Oz in 2005, a production on Off Broadway at the Public Theater in the musical See What I Wanna See by Michael John LaChiusa, which was performed from October to December 2005. Menzel was nominated for the Drama Desk Award and the Drama League Award for her performance.

In 2006 Idina Menzel took on the role of Elphaba a second time . From September 7, 2006 to December 30, 2006 she was a member of the London West End production of Wicked - The Witches of Oz at the Apollo Victoria Theater. During her engagement in London, Menzel was one of the highest paid actresses in the West End with a weekly salary of $ 30,000.

In May 2008 she appeared in Chess in Concert , a concert version of the musical Chess at the Royal Albert Hall in London as Florence Vassy alongside Josh Groban .

At the end of February 2013 it was announced that Menzel would take on the role of Elizabeth in If / Then , the new musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey . The musical premiered on November 5, 2013 at the National Theater in Washington . In March 2014, the musical moved to New York on Broadway to the Richard Rodgers Theater, where it premiered on March 30, 2014. For the role as Elizabeth , Menzel was awarded a Tony Award for the second time in the category Best Actress in a Musical nominated. If / Then played its last performance on Broadway on March 22, 2015, after a total of 29 rehearsals and 401 regular performances.

In the original English version of the Disney film Frozen - Menzel speaks and sings the role of Elsa. The song Let It Go from it became a top 5 hit in the US and was awarded a Grammy and Oscar for best film composition of the year .

At the opening of Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, she sang the American national anthem .

She also sang in Frozen II . The song Into the Unknown was nominated again for the Oscar, but could not win it.
