action
Howard Ratner runs a small jewelry shop with four employees in the middle of New York's diamond district. Here, agents working on commission lead him to customers from the rapper and sports scene, among others. The competitive Howie is well connected in this traditionally Jewish enclave, but is also heavily indebted and is increasingly being persecuted by creditors and debt collectors.
One day Howard awaits the delivery of a large opal from Ethiopia. He believes it's worth at least a million dollars. About his broker Demany he meets Kevin Garnett know, a power forward of the Boston Celtics . Kevin would like to buy the Opal in the hope that he will have a little more luck with his next game. Howard does not want to sell the stone, but rather auction it on the following Monday. However, he allows Garnett to take the opal home with him overnight. He takes Garnett's championship ring as a deposit.
Since Howard is a notorious gambler, he pawns this championship ring to use the money to make a sports bet. As a result, the whole house of cards he built collapses in a matter of hours.
production
The directors were the brothers Benny and Josh Safdie , who also wrote the script together with Ronald Bronstein . As with her last film Good Time , Uncut Gems is also produced by A24 . The Safdie brothers had also worked for Good Time with Daniel Lopatin , who composed the film music .
Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, owner and dealer of a jewelry store in the film, who is also a notorious gambler. Idina Menzel plays Howard's wife Dinah, Julia Fox his employee and lover, Judd Hirsch plays his father-in-law. Eric Bogosian took over the role of his brother-in-law Arno, who works as a bookmaker. Former basketball player Kevin Garnett made a guest appearance as Howard Ratner's customer, as did hip-hop star The Weeknd , whom Ratner caught flirting with his girlfriend.
The shooting took place in autumn 2018, among other places in New York. Darius Khondji acted as cameraman . The production design was designed by Sam Lisenco , the costumes by Miyako Bellizzi .

Peter Debruge of Variety writes that the brothers Benny and Josh Safdie made for an elaborate, ongoing discomfort by a cacophony of sound and music, the restless hand-held camera of Darius Khondji could overlap, which strengthens the madness of overlapping crises in Howard Ratner's life . Debruge recognizes elements from Daddy Long Legs , but also from Good Time , the last Safdies film in which a petty criminal gets caught in a spiral. With Uncut Gems , however, the two directors definitely made their breakthrough, and their character study should not shy away from comparison with films like Taxidriver or Pi . The film is a unique experience, but it can only be endured by viewers who are willing to have their eyes pounded for two hours without a break, which is tantamount to a relentless sensory attack. Howie barely catches his breath in the film, and unlike other films that also have quiet moments in between, the Safdies strive to maintain the intensity throughout the duration, which can be both intoxicating and exhausting. Describing the ending of the film as shocking yet somehow inevitable, Debruge believes this will go down in film history.
Thomas Schultze von Blickpunkt: Film writes that Uncut Gems is a big city thriller with “ Mean Streets ” authenticity, shot with a relentless energy, as if the Dardennes had discovered the all-on-one-card cinema by Cassavetes , completely bare and without make-up Vain, filled with real guys mixed with the few actors. But the film is also the portrait of a hopeless drowning man who, whenever he shows up to take a breath, does something that pushes his head even deeper under water. Adam Sandler has never reinvented himself as he did here when this one-man show with brilliants in his ears and lots of jewelry on his body in his pink shirt, for which life is a continuous bet, says Schultze.
The film's revenues from theatrical screenings in North America amount to around 50 million US dollars.
