The seat and venue of the TIFF is the Festival Tower , which is also known as the Bell Lightbox .

The 44th Toronto International Film Festival took place from September 5th to 15th, 2019. For ten days, 333 films from 84 countries were shown, including 133 world premieres and 30 German films and co-productions. The films shown as part of the Gala Presentations and the Special Presentations were announced on July 23, 2019. The gala presentations celebrated their world premieres: The wonderful Mr. Rogers by Marielle Heller , The Goldfinch by John Crowley , Harriet by Kasi Lemmons , Just Mercy by Destin Daniel Cretton , Ordinary Love by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn , The True History of the Kelly Gang by Justin Kurzel and the graduation film Radioactive by Marjane Satrapi . The festival opened with the documentary Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band by Daniel Roher .

The German contributions and co-productions for the films shown included The Prelude by Ina Weisse , Proxima by Alice Winocour , A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick and Synonymes by the Israeli director Nadav Lapid , who was awarded the Golden Bear in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival . The German co-production Die Sehnsucht des Sisters Gusmão by Karim Aïnouz was also shown, which was submitted by Brazil for the 2020 Academy Awards in the Best International Film category . The Oscar submissions Adam by Maryam Touzani for Morocco and the tragicomedy The Moneychanger by Federico Veiroj for Uruguay were also shown.

The special presentations featured for the first time the mystery thriller Clifton Hill by Albert Shin , Coming Home Again by Wayne Wang , The Friend by Gabriela Cowperthwaite , the science fiction drama Lucy in the Sky by Noah Hawley , the satirical war drama Jojo Rabbit by Taika Waititi , the horror film The Other Lamb by Małgorzata Szumowska, and the animated film Weathering With You by Makoto Shinkai , the Oscar-winning film from Japan.

The full program of the Discovery and Midnight Madness sections and a series of documentaries were announced on August 8, 2019. The rising stars of the festival were announced in mid-August 2019. These were Chino Darín , Geraldine Viswanathan , Kelvin Harrison and Josefine Frida Pettersen .

The jury for the Platform Prize consists of Athina Rachel Tsangari , Carlo Chatrian and Jessica Kiang . This section was the docudrama Rocks by Sarah Gavron opened. Martin Eden by Pietro Marcello was honored in this section, while Anne at 13,000 ft by Kazik Radwanski and Proxima by Alice Winocour also received honorable mentions .

Jojo Rabbit from Taika Waititi received the People's Choice Award, the main prize of the film festival .
