action

In a few years in the future in northeastern Brazil. The village of Bacurau is located in a dusty area, lined with rocky hills, and attracts only a few visitors. The village teacher has found that Bacurau can no longer be found on any map, especially the GPS-supported one. Clean water has to be delivered, but mayoral candidate Tony Jr., who is standing for re-election, promises to improve but only tries to bribe residents with rotten food and free prescription drugs. Only a rebel named Lunga tries to get real help and tries to divert water from the hinterland to Bacurau.

The villagers have gathered to pay their last respects to their Matriarch Carmelita, the 94-year-old village elder. Her granddaughter Teresa made it to the funeral just in time. When one of the tankers supplying Bacurau with water is shot at one day, disaster is announced. The villagers are targeted by a heavily armed group of mostly white Americans who want to shoot them like wild animals. They are led by the sinister Michael. The gringos feel superior to the inhabitants of Bacurau and only speak contemptuously about them, but they fight back more than expected.

production

Bar and film title

"Bacurau" is also the name of a species of night swallow

Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles , who also wrote the script. Both come from the Sertão sub-region of the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil and came up with the story, including the eponymous city of Bacurau, which serves as an ultra-cynical political allegory and to which the film initially zooms in from space, a scene made with CGI was realized.

The name of the city and at the same time the title of the film are evidently based on the name of a crepuscular and nocturnal bird, the Bacurau, a species of night swallow, which in Brazil is also the common expression for the last bus that should not be missed. The flying insect hunters share the same ecological niche as the bats.

Script development

Mendonça Filho presented his film Aquarius in Cannes in 2016 and used his appearance on the red carpet to protest against the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff . He was then abused on social media and attacked by the press. This gave him a foretaste of how right-wing extremists act and how authoritarian thinking works, all of which went into Bacurau's script , according to Mendonça Filho. The director also explains that in early 2019 the Ministry of Culture was abolished in Brazil , which is a problem for all filmmakers in the country and is undermining the entire Brazilian film industry.

Cast, filming and score

Domingas, the city's doctor, is played by Sônia Braga . The American gringos who attack Bacurau are led by sinister Michael, played by Udo Kier . Teresa, the granddaughter of the deceased village elder, is played by Bárbara Colen . Thardelly Lima took on the role of Mayor Tony Jr. Silvero Pereira plays the rebel and Robin Hood blend Lunga.

The score was composed by Mateus Alves and Tomaz Alves Souza . Urânio released the soundtrack for download in mid-September 2019.

reception

Reviews

The film has so far won over 91 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.7 out of a possible 10 points, placing it in the middle of the films presented in Cannes. In the critics' mirror of critic.de he received mostly positive reviews. In the critics' survey published by Screen on the festival entries in Cannes, he received 2.6 out of 4 possible points.

Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter writes that Bacurau is visually impressive and, with its anamorphic lens shots , split screens and side exits between scenes, deliberately reminds of the lush visual grammar of classic 1970s films. However, the neo- western never comes together as a satisfactory whole. Native Brazilians of the region and historians who study it would, however, appreciate how Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles fall back on the cangaceiro tradition of extravagantly dressed “socially outlaws” and more powerfully through the traces of coronelism and unjust rule Think oligarchs.

Peter Debruge of Variety explains Bacurau set foot quickly the realm of the surreal, which makes the film to his almost buñuelianischen sci-fi thriller, like a spaghetti western was filmed with comic zooms. Some shots were reminiscent of Sergio Leone's For a Fistful of Dollars , in which Clint Eastwood's character anticipates the impending orgy of violence by hiring the undertaker to make three coffins, according to Debruge. Initially, the film mainly focuses on the residents of Bacurau, until the script finally draws attention to Udo Kier's character. Debruge notes that while the filmmakers decided to focus on two women, despite the expectations that they might develop into film heroines, there is no central figure in the film.
