Ken Loach

The Jury Prize ( Prix du Jury ) rewarded with the annually organized film festivals of Cannes a competition film (feature film), which is particularly appreciated by the jury. The third most important award after the Palme d'Or and the Grand Jury Prize was created in 1951 as a special jury prize ( Prix ​​spécial du Jury ). In 1967 the award was replaced by the Grand Jury Prize and introduced two years later as the Jury Prize.

The jury award is optional and usually honors the directorial work of young filmmakers. The competition jury, which is usually composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize, which is presented to the winner in the form of a certificate.

Award winners

The works of French film directors were most frequently honored with the jury's prize (14 wins), followed by their colleagues from Great Britain (7), Japan (6), Poland (5) and Italy (4). The British Andrea Arnold (2006, 2009, 2016) and Ken Loach (1990, 1993 and 2012) received three awards . The Italian Michelangelo Antonioni (1960 and 1962), the Japanese Masaki Kobayashi (1963 and 1965) and the Iranian Samira Makhmalbaf (2000 and 2003) each won the jury's prize twice .

Several times in the past, the jury was unable to agree on a winner. Film directors from German-speaking cinema have only been successful in 1959, when the East German Konrad Wolf ( stars ) was able to prevail against the competition. In 1995 and 1996 the special jury award was reintroduced at short notice, while in 2004 the award was given to the American actress Irma P. Hall ( Ladykillers ) and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's feature film Tropical Malady .
