Claude Miller (born February 20, 1942 in Paris , † April 4, 2012 in Paris ) was a French film director and screenwriter .

Career

Claude Miller came from a Jewish petty bourgeois family. He studied at the IDHEC film school in Paris, today's École Nationale Supérieure des métiers de l'image et du son, La fémis . Miller later worked as an assistant alongside great directors such as Marcel Carné , Michel Deville , Jean-Luc Godard , Robert Bresson and Jacques Demy . From 1968 to 1975 he was production manager for various films by François Truffaut , an experience that had a decisive influence on him. During this time he made several short films, but it was not until 1976 that his first feature film Our Way is the Best followed , which was nominated in several categories for the French César Film Prize. More César nominations and awards for some of his films followed. Charlotte Gainsbourg received her first major film role from him in The Naughty Girl (1985). 1998 won Miller the big prize of the jury in Cannes for his film The class trip (screenplay: Emmanuel Carrère ).

Miller's most famous films also include The Interrogation with Romy Schneider and The Eye with Isabelle Adjani .

Claude Miller was president of the film school La fémis in Paris from 2007 . After his death, his last work, the literary film adaptation Thérèse (original title: Thérèse Desqueyroux ) based on the novel of the same name by François Mauriac with Audrey Tautou in the title role, was selected as the closing film of the 65th Cannes International Film Festival .
