After school she slips into a different life, swaps her clothes for silk stockings and pumps and passes the time in the cinema with romantic films. When she is caught stealing several times, she drives to a big city in Provence and takes the job of a maid there. There she met the 40-year-old family man Michel at a movie evening and began an affair with him. Her life seems to get a new direction at first, until she meets the petty criminal Raoul, whom she surprises during a break-in. Janine persuades Janine to steal from her employer and run off to the sea with the money they share. There they enjoy a brief period of amorous happiness before Janine, who is now pregnant, is denounced as a nudist by a farmer and arrested by the gendarmerie .

In a reformatory for girls, she meets the self-confident Mauricette and escapes with her. She rejects the idea of an illegal abortion and opts for her child. In her hometown, however, she finds no support, so she sets out to find a new and better life.

criticism

film-dienst 9/1989: “Sensitively staged and in the leading role superbly played initiation story of a young woman, behind whose rebellion lies the search for identity and security. Based on an original script by François Truffaut, the film congenially enlivens the moods of Truffaut's works without becoming plagiarism. "
