Lewis Gilbert

Lewis Gilbert (born March 6, 1920 in London , England - † February 23, 2018 in Monaco ) was a British film director , producer and screenwriter .

life and work

Lewis Gilbert began making documentaries while in the Royal Air Force . This led him to feature films after the war , where he worked successfully as both director and producer. Some of his films include the theme of World War II .

In 1966 Gilbert directed the film The seducer sends greetings with Michael Caine . The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, one of which was nominated for Best Picture. Gilbert was also nominated for a Golden Globe for best director and received the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 . In 2004 a remake of the film with Jude Law was made.

After a break, Gilbert was asked by Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli to direct the James Bond film You Only Live Twice . Gilbert later returned to this film series and also made The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979).

In the 1980s, Gilbert turned small film productions, including film adaptations of plays by Willy Russell .
