action

1928: David Ash, a young professor of psychology , specializes in finding scientific explanations for paranormal occurrences.

He receives repeated mail from a woman who works as a housekeeper in an old country estate called Edbrook Hall and claims to be haunted by ghosts. He decides to pay the old lady a visit and to prove to her - but also to himself - that she is wrong. In Edbrook Hall, David gets to know the siblings Robert, Simon and Christina, who take care of their old "Aunty Tess", but also don't miss a moment to make fun of their supposed ghosts. Christina is revealing, serves Robert as a nude model and kisses with him. David falls for Christina's charm, and soon they both spend a lot of time together and get closer. But these beautiful moments do not hide the fact that strange things are going on in the house, he experiences hallucinations more and more and knows less and less whether his perceptions are illusion or reality . David is plagued by childhood guilt related to the death of his twin sister Juliet. And now he sees his deceased sister, whom he follows to a cemetery and then comes across the tombstone of the three siblings - who died five years ago in the "fire of Edbrook Hall". He unexpectedly finds the local doctor's house empty, but finds his sister there again, who explains to him that she can save him and that he should take her hand. But Christina shows up and David leaves the house with her instead of his sister. At Edbrook Hall he learns that the children's mother drowned herself when she once found Simon drunk and Robert and Christina having sex, and Tess then locked the children in the bedroom and set a fire. The siblings put Tess to death because they want to keep David prisoner instead of them, create an inferno around him in which Juliet appears and leads him out. Outside she explains to him that he is not to blame for her death and disappears again.

David goes back on the train and is picked up by his assistant, but someone follows them - it's Christina.

Reviews

“The attempt to counter the shrill effects of today's horror films with the restrained horror of morbid ghost stories largely fails due to the technically clean, but uninspired direction and an unconvincing main actor. The weaknesses are partially offset by the atmospheric photography and the detailed equipment. "

- film service 24/1995

“This film wouldn't even have deserved a video premiere if it weren't for the actors Aidan Quinn and Anthony Andrews. And admittedly, the cute Kate Beckinsale is also quite nice to look at. Otherwise this confused story of guilt, atonement and incest is not very witty. "
