Giorgos Lanthimos ( Greek Γιώργος Λάνθιμος , also Georgios or Yorgos ; born May 27, 1973 in Athens ) is a Greek film actor , film producer , film and theater director .

Life

Lanthimos was born in Athens and learned to direct at the Stavrakos Film School . In the 1990s he directed various videos for Greek dance theater as well as commercials, music videos and experimental plays. Since his time in the field of commercials, film editor Yorgos Mavropsaridis has often been responsible for editing his productions.

In 2001 he co-directed the film My Best Friend with Lakis Lazopoulos . He was part of the team that designed the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2004 Athens Olympics. In 2005 he wrote and directed the experimental film Kinetta , which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival .

His 2009 film Dogtooth (also known as Kynodontas ) won the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes International Film Festival . The film drama was also nominated for an Oscar in 2011 in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . The film was already on the shortlist for an Oscar in 2010 . The film won five Greek Film Academy Awards out of eight nominations , including three awards for Lanthimos for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Internationally, Lanthimos and his film won numerous other awards. These include honors at film festivals and award ceremonies in Slovenia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Sweden , Ireland, Canada, Portugal and the USA, as well as nominations at the British Independent Film Awards and the Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina .

In 2010 he was the producer and leading actor of the film Attenberg by the Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari . A year later, Lanthimos and co-writer Efthymis Filippou received the script award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival for the script of his feature film Alpis .

Lanthimos received the European Film Award in 2015 and an Oscar nomination in 2017 for the screenplay for the feature film The Lobster , written together with Efthymis Filippou .

In 2017 he won the script award at the 70th Cannes Film Festival for the script for The Killing of a Sacred Deer , also written together with Filippou .

In 2018 his historical drama The Favorite celebrated its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival . The film received positive reviews from critics and won an Oscar in 2019 for lead actress Olivia Colman . Lanthimos himself also received Oscar nominations in the categories of film and directing, but lost out to the producers of Green Book - A Special Friendship and his Mexican colleague Alfonso Cuarón ( Roma ) .

In 2019 Lanthimos was appointed to the competition jury of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival .
