Ljubljana International Film Festival

The Ljubljana International Film Festival ( LIFFe for short , Slovenian : Ljubljanski mednarodni filmski festival ) has been held annually in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana since 1990 . With around 50,000 visitors annually, it is one of the largest film festivals in the country.

Organized under the name Film Art Fest Ljubljana until 1996 , the international festival has specialized from the beginning in artistically demanding films that have not yet been shown in theaters in Slovenia. For this purpose, award-winning films from major festivals such as Cannes , Venice and Rotterdam are invited. In addition to feature films , the program also includes documentaries , animation and short films . Workshops, seminars and exhibitions take place as part of the festival - among others in cooperation with the Academy for Theater, Radio, Film and Television .

The main venue and organizer of the festival is the Cankarjev dom culture and congress center , which opened in 1981 . In addition, several are cinemas recorded in the city center.

The main prize of the festival is called Vodomec (international name: Kingfisher Award ). It has been awarded by an international jury to the best first or second film since 1996 and is endowed with 5000 euros. Vodomec is the Slovenian word for kingfisher . The Zlati kolu Audience Award (international name: Golden Reel Award ), which has been awarded since 2000, consists of the distribution of the award-winning film in Slovenia. In addition, a FIPRESCI Prize has been awarded by the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique since 2004 and the Amnesty International Film Award since 2005 .

The main sponsor of the festival is a Slovenian mobile communications company .
