The Dolby Theater , home of the 2019 Academy Awards

The 91st presentation of the Oscars ( English 91st Academy Awards ) took place on 24 February 2019 Dolby Theater in Los Angeles instead. In the year of the Oscars, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films of 2018 .

The two US film producers Glenn Weiss and Donna Gigliotti took over the production of the award ceremony for the first time . The award ceremony was to be hosted by comedian and actor Kevin Hart . However, two days after the announcement, Hart resigned after criticism of the nomination based on previous homophobic statements by Hart. The award ceremony was then held for the first time since 1989 without a moderator.

The most successful film of the evening in absolute numbers of the awarded trophies was the film biography Bohemian Rhapsody , which was successful in four categories and was awarded in three technical areas in particular ( best sound , best sound editing , best editing ). The films Green Book - A Special Friendship , Roma and Black Panther each received three Oscars . The racism drama Green Book was the only film of the evening to score points with two awards in Big Five categories ( best film , best original screenplay). Roma , who was also nominated in the Best Film category, received a. a. Oscars in the categories of Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film . Black Panther won over the jury with its equipment and music ( best production design , best costume design , best film music ).

Best foreign language film

A total of 87 submitted candidates for the best foreign language film were accepted. A shortlist of nine films was announced on December 17, 2018.

At the beginning of August 2018, Swiss Films announced at the Locarno Festival that the documentary Eldorado by Markus Imhoof would be submitted as a Swiss candidate for the award ceremony. As a German contribution was work without the author of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck selected. Austria submitted the documentary film Waldheim's Waltz by Ruth Beckermann .

Honor Oscar

The honorary winners selected by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were recognized at the 10th Governors Awards on November 18, 2018 . For the first time since 2011, the two producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall were given two Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Awards . The winners were:
