Łukasz Żal

Łukasz Żal (born June 24, 1981 in Koszalin ) is a Polish cameraman and film director .

Life

Łukasz Żal attended the national film school in Łódź , where he graduated in 2007. His graduation film was Mistrz swiata (2006). He made several short films and was a cameraman for various Polish productions. For the short documentary Paparazzi (2011) he received the Golden Frog of the Plus Camerimage Festival . He had his international breakthrough with the camera work for the film Ida (2013) by Pawel Pawlikowski . Together with cinematographer Ryszard Lenczewski , he received the Spotlight Award from the American Society of Cinematographers , the Golden Frog and the European Film Prize . At the 2015 Academy Awards , he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Cinematography . He received further nominations for the BAFTA Award and the Polish Eagle Film Award . The renewed collaboration with Pawlikowski on the historical drama Cold War - The Latitude of Love (2018) brought Żal another Oscar nomination.
