The 87th ceremony of Oscars ( english 87th Academy Awards ) took place on 22 February 2015 Dolby Theater in Los Angeles instead. This made it, along with the 2009 Academy Awards, the earliest Academy Awards held in a year.

As in the previous year, American film, television and theater producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were responsible for the production of the 87th Academy Awards . The award ceremony was hosted for the first time by actor Neil Patrick Harris , who previously hosted the Tony Awards four times (2009, 2011-2013) and twice the Emmy Awards (2009, 2013).

The nominations were announced on January 15, 2015 by Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, directors J. J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón, and actor Chris Pine . It was the first time that all nominations for the 24 categories were announced during the event.

During the live broadcast in Germany on ProSieben , there was a technical glitch, which meant that viewers missed the award of the Oscars for the best supporting actor.

Submissions for the category Best Foreign Language Film

A total of 83 countries applied for the Best Foreign Language Film category , which set a record for submissions. These included Mauritania , Panama , Malta and Kosovo, four countries that were represented with a film at the Oscar for the first time; the Mauritanian contribution was even nominated. Nigeria , which wanted to send a film in the running for the Oscar for the first time, missed the registration deadline.

A shortlist of nine films was made from the 83 submissions and published on December 19, 2014. From 9 to 11 January 2015, the five nominees were selected from a total of 40 invited members of the Academy. The four shortlisted candidates that did not make it to a nomination were the Swedish contribution Force Majeure by Ruben Östlund , the Dutch film Lucia - Angel of Death? by Paula van der Oest , the Venezuelan proposal Libertador by Alberto Arvelo and the Georgian film The Corn Island by Giorgi Ovashvili .

None of the three German-language contributions submitted - Das sinstere Tal for Austria, The Beloved Sisters for Germany and The Circle for Switzerland - made it onto the shortlist.
