Graham Moore (born October 18, 1981 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American screenwriter and writer . His debut novel The Sherlockian was published in 2010 and was on the New York Times bestseller list . In 2011 he wrote the screenplay for the 2014 film The Imitation Game - A Top Secret Life . For this screenplay he received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2015 .

Life

Moore grew up in Chicago, the son of a lawyer and a university clerk. His parents divorced early and raised their son according to the Jewish faith . Moore studied at the University of Chicago Laboratory School , where he graduated in 1999. He then studied religion at Columbia University and worked as a sound engineer before becoming a writer.

One of his first works as a screenwriter was a script for the short-lived television series 10 Things I Hate About You (2009-2010). This was followed by his debut novel The Sherlockian , a mix of modern detective novel and a Sherlock Holmes story that jumps back and forth between two storylines.

His screenplay for the film The Imitation Game - A Top Secret Life (2014), which he wrote back in 2011 and which was placed on the well-known "Black List" of the most popular adaptations, received an Oscar.
