action
Andrew Neiman is a talented 19-year-old drummer attending the (fictional) Shaffer Conservatory of Music in New York City. One day the head of the studio band, Terence Fletcher, discovered him. The band leader tries to spur his students on to top performance through sadistic severity and verbal humiliation. Andrew is facing increasing levels of “carrot and stick” psychological violence. Increasingly, he sees through the methods, but gets involved with them. He even separates from his girlfriend Nicole so that he can concentrate exclusively on his music career.
Due to Fletcher's enormous pressure to be on time, Andrew causes a car accident and comes to a performance injured. He cannot play in his condition and Fletcher throws him out of the band. Andrew freaks out, throws himself at Fletcher and hits him, whereupon he is expelled from the conservatory. Meanwhile, after the suicide of a former student, the supervisor learns of Fletcher's degrading methods. Reluctantly, Andrew is persuaded to testify anonymously against his teacher. Fletcher then loses his job.
Several months later, Andrew gave up his dream of a music career, his drum set packed away and his buddy Rich Posters thrown in the trash. By chance he meets Fletcher, who is a pianist in a bar. Fletcher tells Andrew about his eviction. He justifies his inhuman methods with the fact that he caused the musicians to go beyond their limits and become better than one would have ever expected of them. He's looking for the next Louis Armstrong or Charlie Parker , who didn't let themselves be discouraged by harsh reviews, but became music legends. Fletcher persuades Andrew to take over the drums in his band at a concert that will be attended by many talent scouts. Andrew agrees and starts practicing again.
At the beginning of the concert, Fletcher told Andrew that he knew very well who testified against him. To Andrew's surprise, Fletcher begins the concert with a piece that Andrew does not know and for which he is the only member of the band who has no marks. Andrew tries to save himself through improvisation , but he still embarrasses himself in front of the band and the audience, which Fletcher notes with satisfaction. After the play, Andrew runs off the stage and seeks comfort in his father's arms. But then he returns to the stage, sits down at the drum set and begins the next track, Caravan, as Fletcher says . The initially stunned Fletcher lets him go and gives the rest of the band the job. When Andrew independently extends the end of the piece with a masterful solo, Fletcher finally seems convinced of Andrew's musical genius and encourages him to a furious finale.
