Melissa Marie Benoist [ bə'nɔɪst ] (born October 4, 1988 in Houston , Texas ) is an American singer and actress . She is known for her role as Kara Danvers / Supergirl in the television series Supergirl , for which she received the Saturn Award for Best TV Leading Actress in 2017 .

Life

Melissa Benoist grew up with two sisters. She became known for her role as Marley Rose in the Fox series Glee . In 2014 she played alongside Miles Teller and JK Simmons in Damien Chazelles Whiplash . Since October 2015 she has played the title role of Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers in the series adaptation of DC Comics Supergirl . She starred in the 2015 movie No Place Without You .

In March 2015, she married her Glee colleague Blake Jenner . In late December 2016, she announced the decision to divorce Blake Jenner because of "irreconcilable differences". She has been engaged to her acting partner Chris Wood since February 2019 and has been married since September 1, 2019.
