Loreto Chapel Wolfegg

The Loreto Chapel Wolfegg is a Loreto chapel south of Wolfegg in the Ravensburg district in Baden-Württemberg . Stations of the Cross on the southern outskirts of Wolfegg point to this nearby pilgrimage site .

Wolfegg's Loreto Chapel is a replica of the Casa Santa , the Holy House . It is the house of the Mother of God Mary , which according to legend was transferred by angels from the Holy Land to Loreto in Italy . Little by little, numerous replicas of the Holy House were created in southern Germany, especially in the 17th century. Count Maximilian Willibald von Waldburg-Wolfegg determined in his will the construction of a Casa Santa in 1668 after he had not found time to make a pilgrimage to Loreto during his lifetime.

The chapel is an almost windowless, dark, barrel-vaulted room, a replica of the chapel in Loreto, but larger in scale. The miraculous image is also an exact copy of the original from Loreto and was carried into the chapel in large procession in 1707. In the baroque period it was decorated with precious gold brocade and silver jewelry. The Loreto Chapel was last renovated in 1968. Inside, the whitewashed frescoes were exposed again and the original brick painting was restored.
