Place of pilgrimage

Loreto, basilica

After St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , Loreto is the second most important place of pilgrimage in Italy and one of the most important in the Catholic world. The Basilica of the Holy House contains the Santa Casa , according to legend the Holy House of Nazareth, where Mary grew up and received the Annunciation . It is said to have been carried to Loreto by angels.

The place was named after numerous church buildings, including geographical conditions, for example for the Lorettoberge in Freiburg or Constance . In the German-speaking area there are numerous Loreto chapels that are modeled on the Holy House of Loreto.

The basilica's art treasures include a Black Madonna and important works by Melozzo da Forlì , Andrea Sansovino and Luca Signorelli .

European youth meeting

Pope Benedict XVI invited the youth in October 2006 during the general audience to a meeting with the Pope on September 1st and 2nd, 2007 in the Italian Marian pilgrimage site on the occasion of the Agora of the Italian Youth. The meeting was organized by the Italian Bishops' Conference in collaboration with the Pontifical Council for the Laity. More than 400,000 young people from all over Europe came. At the meeting, the Pope made an emphatic call for environmental and climate protection. Loreto 2007 was the start of the XXIII. World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, which took place in the summer of 2008.
