Ostra Vetere is an Italian commune with 3178 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ancona , Marche region .
geography
The place is 49 km from Ancona at 250 m above sea level. The municipality covers 29.86 km². The patron saint of the place is St. Giovanni Battista.
The neighboring communities are Barbara , Castelleone di Suasa , Corinaldo , Montecarotto , Ostra and Serra de 'Conti .
Within the municipality there are authorized vineyards for the production of the famous white wine Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi .
history
Ostra Vetere has had its current name since March 19, 1882 by royal decree. The city used to be called Montenovo ; the name can be traced for the first time in the 12th century.
On the territory of the municipality lie the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ostra, the archaeological remains of which are currently being studied.
Culture
- The birthday of Saint Pasquale Baylon on May 17th, on which many pilgrims are expected, is celebrated every year with festivities that end with moving fireworks over the city.
- The Fiera de Giovanni Battista , a festival in honor of the local saint, is celebrated on June 24th.
- The “Maria Crocefissa Satellico” museum in the former monastery of Santa Lucia the Clarissen was created at the request of the municipality and the parish of Santa Maria. It shows the history of the municipality of Montenovo, today's Ostra Vetere. The museum opened on January 26, 2008. The municipal library is also housed there.
