Genga

Genga is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 1699 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ancona in Marche . The municipality is located about 60 kilometers west-southwest of Ancona and belongs to the Comunità montana dell'Esino Frasassi .

Attractions

The temple of the architect Giuseppe Valadier from 1828, octagonal and in the entrance area of ​​a cave, reaching up to the ceiling, is particularly impressive.

About six kilometers south-east of Genga, near the gorge and the beautiful stalactite caves of Frasassi, there is the Abbazia di San Vittore delle Chiuse in the small medicinal bath of San Vittore delle Chiuse , of which the church, which was restored in 1925–1932, has been preserved. The monastery, founded in the 11th century, is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the Marche region.
The church rises as a central building above the ground plan of a Greek cross and thus follows the eastern, that is the Armenian and Byzantine architecture . The hall-like interior with its very high round pillars above the crossing , which carry the low dome , differs from the oriental cross- domed church . There is an apse on the north and south walls. They reach the same height as the three apses on the east wall.
The campanile was added in the 15th century .
