Temple of Valadier

The Temple of Valadier is a temple commissioned by Pope Leo XII. built church in Genga . The church was built in 1828 on the basis of a design by the architect Giuseppe Valadier .

The church is octagonal in plan . The roof dome is covered with lead sheets . The church was built in a grotto and is made of travertine blocks taken from a quarry of the Frasassi Grotto . In the past, a marble statue of the Madonna and Child was venerated in the church; it came from the workshop of Antonio Canova . Today the statue is on display in the Museum of Sacred Art in Genga, and a copy has been placed in the church. The hermitage of Santa Maria Infra Saxa is in the same grotto .
