Cupramontana is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4485 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Ancona in Marche . The municipality is located about 45 kilometers southwest of Ancona and borders the province of Macerata . Cupramontana is part of the Comunità montana dell'Esino Frasassi . The Esino forms the north-western boundary of the municipality .
history
Cupra was a fertility goddess of the Piceni and Umbrians . The Roman settlement was of some importance as a municipium . Under the rule of the Duke of Spoleto , the town was known as Massaccio . From the 13th century it belonged to the Papal States. With the unification of Italy one returned to the ancient name of the place.
