Kalkan is a touristic place in the Kaş district of the Antalya Province in southern Turkey . It is located about 27 km west of Kaş on the Mediterranean Sea , at the foot of the Taurus Mountains .
tourism
Apart from Kaş, Kalkan is the only place between Fethiye and Antalya where there is still a large amount of fishing. From 1980 this village was developed for tourism, but mass tourism is not to be found here. Very strict building regulations keep the city small and architecturally mixed. It has a historic center known as Old Kalkan .
Near Kalkan are the historical sites of Xanthos , Letoon and Patara . In addition to the Blue Grotto, Kaputaş Beach and Saklıkent (Tlos), these are popular excursion destinations.
history
Before 1920, mostly Greeks lived in Kalkan. The Greek name of the city was Kalamaki . With the Treaty of Lausanne from 1923, all Greeks had to leave the city. Some moved to the Greek island of Kastelorizo , but most of them moved to the area around Athens on the Attica peninsula .
