Shrines of Europe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1996 a total of six of the most important Marian shrines in Europe came together under the name Shrines of Europe . On September 18, 2017, Einsiedeln in Switzerland became the seventh member.

Emergence

The first contacts at the municipal level with the Italian Marian pilgrimage site of Loreto came about in the Altöttingen anniversary year of 1989 and almost two years later led to a town twinning. At this point in time, Loreto already had a town partnership with the Polish Marian pilgrimage town of Czestochowa , which in turn had partnerships with Lourdes and Fatima.

Over the years, the cities involved wanted to create a common communication platform. In 1996 the working group “Shrines of Europe” was founded, initially with the member cities Altötting , Lourdes , Loreto , Fátima and Czestochowa . A few years later, Mariazell in Austria was added. The mayors of the seven pilgrimage sites meet each year at one of the member sites for a working meeting.
