Franz Julius Lütkens (also: Lütcke ; * October 21, 1650 in Dellien ; † August 12, 1712 in Copenhagen ) was a German Protestant theologian of a pietistic direction and court preacher to Friedrich IV .

Life

The son of a mill master Franz Lütkens and his wife Magarethe Wolff attended school in Neuhaus and Lüneburg in 1658 and moved to Wittenberg University on August 22, 1668 , where he studied theology until 1673. He then moved to the University of Jena . Influenced by the Lüneburg theologian and superintendent Caspar Hermann Sandhagen , he was enthusiastic about the new theological direction of Pietism by Philipp Jakob Spener .

From 1674 he was court master in Bullingen and teacher in Hamburg. In 1676 he became rector of the Saldem grammar school in Brandenburg an der Havel , then in 1679 a deacon at the Katharinenkirche in Magdeburg , where the like-minded Christian Scriver was pastor. In 1684 he became the first pastor and prepositus at the Marienkirche in Stargard (Pomerania) , in 1687 he was appointed provost and consistorial councilor at the Petrikirche in Cölln , where he was appointed superintendent of Berlin by Spener in 1691 .

In 1704, Lütkens accepted a call as court preacher to the Danish King Frederick IV, where he was consistorial advisor and professor of theology at the University of Copenhagen . There he was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Theology by his employer. For the Danish-Hallesche Mission founded by the king in the same year , he beat the German theologians Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg (1682–1719) and Heinrich Plütschau (1677–1746), who had studied with August Hermann Francke (1663–1727), as the first Protestant missionaries for the Danish colony in Tranquebar in southern India . His work includes pamphlets, sermons and some theological treatises.
