Caspar Hermann Sandhagen (born October 22, 1639 in Borgholzhausen , † July 14, 1697 in Kiel ) was a German Protestant theologian and general superintendent in the Gottorf part of Schleswig-Holstein.

Life

Caspar Hermann Sandhagen was the son of an elementary school teacher and was trained at a grammar school in Osnabrück . He then studied theology at the University of Rostock from 1657 and later moved to the University of Strasbourg . In 1665 he became assistant preacher and two years later rector in Bielefeld . In Lüneburg he was appointed superintendent and pastor in 1672 .

In 1684 Sandhagen was appointed Oberhof preacher and general superintendent Duke Christian Albrechts at Gottorf Castle . However, because at that time the ducal portion of the Duchy of Schleswig was occupied by the Danish King Christian V , Sandhagen was initially unable to take up these offices. In 1687 he worked briefly as general superintendent for Western Pomerania in Stargard, but gave up his office after a few weeks. Because his Lüneburg position had meanwhile been filled with Johann Wilhelm Petersen , he was temporarily employed as a pastor at the city church in Celle . Only after the Altona Treaty in 1689 was he able to take up his post in Gottorf.

Shortly before his death, Sandhagen was attacked for one of his sermons by the general superintendent of the royal portion of the Duchy of Schleswig Josua Schwartz , who recognized heterodoxy in Sandhagen's testimony and in 1697 the pamphlet Thorough refutation of almost half of the Schleßwig-Holstein Ministry in May of 1696. Yearly for the penitential sermon but consistently directed against him the exposition of the Seventh Chapter Michae serving the Chiliasmo . Sick during a visitation trip , Sandhagen was able to assert his orthodoxy to the theology professors at Kiel University and died shortly afterwards. After his death, the conflict was continued by his successor, General Superintendent Heinrich Muhlius , and the pastor Johann Melchior Kraft .

theology

Sandhagen was a Pietist and had corresponded regularly with Philipp Jacob Spener since 1677 . Even during his time in Bielefeld, he kept in touch with the Labadists in neighboring Herford . He published a few German-language treatises that were reprinted well into the 18th century, and made a name for himself by editing the Bible commentaries by his Strasbourg teacher Sebastian Schmidt . He was regarded as a leading exegete and repeatedly accommodated students who wanted to learn how to interpret the Bible. These included, among others, August Hermann Francke , the Seine River in Sandhagens house in autumn 1687 conversion experienced, Joachim Justus Breithaupt and Hermann von der Hardt . However , Sandhagen distanced himself from the separatist pietism of his Lüneburg successor Petersen.
