plant
Schmidt belongs to Lutheran Orthodoxy , but at the same time overcame it through his efforts to interpret the biblical text in a philologically precise manner , which among other things influenced his pupil Philipp Jakob Spener . He wrote countless disputations and commentaries on numerous books of the Old and New Testaments . His best-known works include the Collegium Biblicum , a doctrine of faith harmonizing the statements of the Old and New Testaments, with which Schmidt is counted among the forerunners of Biblical theology , as well as the Latin translation of the Bible Biblia Sacra, sive Testamentum Vetus et Novum ex Linguis originalibus in linguam Latinam translatum (1696). Together with Johann Benedict Carpzov II , he edited Maimonides ' Mishna commentary.
