David Nickson, Baron Nickson

David Wigley Nickson, Baron Nickson KBE DL FRSE (born November 27, 1929 ) is a British executive who was a member of the House of Lords from 1994 to 2015 .

Life

Military service and professional career

After attending school, Nickson did his military service with the Coldstream Guards from 1949 to 1954 and then began his professional career at the publisher William Collins & Sons , where he was director from 1959 to 1976. He was then Vice Chairman of the Board of Management of the publishing house between 1976 and 1983 and director of Radio Clyde Ltd. from 1981 to 1985. During this time he became in 1971 Director of the insurer General Accident and held this post until 1998. During this time he became involved 1974-1979 as a member of the advisory Board for Industrial Development in Scotland from 1979 to 1981 as chairman of the employers' association Confederation of British Industry (CBI) for Scotland and was also a member of the Scottish Economy Council between 1979 and 1991 .

Nickson, who became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1981 and Deputy Lieutenant of the Lieutenancy Area Stirling and Falkirk in 1982 , joined the beverage company Scottish & Newcastle as a director in 1981 , where he was first Vice-Chairman from 1982 and lastly from 1983 until 1989 chairman of the board .

In addition to his work at Scottish & Newcastle, he became director of Clydesdale Bank in 1981 , became its vice chairman in 1990 and was most recently chairman of the board from 1991 to 1998. He was also director of Edinburgh Investment Trust plc from 1981 to 1994, chairman of the Countryside Commission of Scotland from 1983 to 1985, Hambros plc from 1988 to 1998 and National Australia Bank from 1991 to 1996 .

Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University and Member of the House of Lords

In 1985 Nickson, who became a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1987 , became a member of the National Economic Development Council and served on that body until 1988. He then served from 1988 to 1995 chairman of the Foundation for the Atlantic salmon ( Atlantic Salmon Trust ). Nickson, who was president of the CBI employers' association between 1986 and 1988, was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1987 for his services, and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

He has also served between 1989 and 1995 as chairman of the Monitoring Board for wages of older workers ( Senior Salaries Review Body ) from 1989 to 1991 as chairman of the Scottish Development Agency ( Scottish Development Agency Scottish) from 1990 to 1993 as chairman of the Association of companies ( Scottish Enterprise ) and then from 1993 to 1998 as Vice Chairman of the Management Board of the insurer General Accident plc.

Nickson, who from 1993 to 2002 the first Chancellor of the newly founded Glasgow Caledonian University has been, is honorary doctor of the University of Stirling , Edinburgh Napier University , the University of the West of Scotland and the Glasgow Caledonian University.

On March 22, 1994, he was promoted to Life Peer by a letters patent entitled Baron Nickson , of Renagour in the District of Stirling . On 4 May 1994 on its introduction (followed Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the House of Lords he belonged to the group of non-party members , the so-called Cross Benchers . On March 27, 2015, Nickson voluntarily retired and left the House of Lords under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014.

Lord Nickson, who was President of the Scottish Salmon Fishing Boards ( Association of Scottish Salmon Fishing Boards ) between 1996 and 2011 and captain of the Royal Company of Archers , also served on the Scotland Minister's Task Force for Scottish Salmon in 1997 and became Vice- Lord Lieutenant of Stirling and Selkirk.
