Lieutenancy Area

Lieutenancy Area in Scotland is the name given to the areas of responsibility of the ceremonial Lord Lieutenants , the representatives of the British monarch in Scotland . The territory of a Lieutenancy Area may differ from the current counties and historic counties of Scotland. Similar areas in England are the Ceremonial Counties there .

The office of Lord Lieutenant in the four cities of Aberdeen , Dundee , Edinburgh and Glasgow is carried out ex officio by the respective Lord Provost , an elected politician. All other Lord Lieutenants are appointed by the British monarch. Scotland is currently divided into 35 Lieutenancy Areas:
