Scriver was the youngest son of the Rendsburg businessman Christian Scriver and his wife Abigail, daughter of the Lübeck businessman Thomas Heben. His father and three of his siblings died of the plague the year he was born. His mother married the Rendsburg provost Gerhard Kuhlmann, who also died in 1635, after which she and her children moved in with their father. He attended the Katharineum in Lübeck from 1645 to 1647 and then studied at the University of Rostock . There Scriver received his master's degree in 1651. Afterwards he was first tutor. In 1653 he was appointed archdeacon at the Jakobikirche in Stendal and in 1667 as pastor of the Jakobikirche in Magdeburg . In 1690 Scriver was appointed senior court preacher at the Quedlinburg Abbey by Anna Dorothea von Sachsen-Weimar , where he soon fell ill and died.

As an edifying and popular writer, he exerted a great influence on his contemporaries and posterity. Through his criticism of the grievances and outward appearances of the Lutheran Church, he became a pioneer of pietism . Scriver's Glory and Beatitude of the Children of God experienced numerous editions in the editing of his son-in-law Johann Heinrich Hävecker and was reissued after both of them died in 1730 and 1864. Scriver's Seelen-Schatz , a collection of his weekly sermons at the St. Jakobi Church in Magdeburg, was in its twelfth edition in 1744. Christian Scriver is the lyricist of the hymn The dear sun light and splendor ( EG 479).

Scriver has been married four times. Of his total of 15 children, only the son Michael Heinrich from his second marriage and the youngest daughter Catharina Elisabeth from his last marriage to Elisabeth Silohin survived him.

His tomb was in the St. Jakobi Church. After the church was demolished, it was placed in the cloister of the Wallon Church .
