Karl Dienst

Karl Dienst (born January 24, 1930 in Weisel , Sankt Goarshausen district , Hesse-Nassau province ; † May 27, 2014 in Darmstadt ) was a German theologian and historian. He is considered a chronicler of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau .

Dienst passed his Abitur at the Rheingau School in Geisenheim in 1949 and studied Protestant theology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he received his doctorate in 1955. From 1959 to 1970 he was pastor in Giessen . He then worked as a senior church councilor in the church administration of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau in Darmstadt until 1994 , where he was the theological director for school and extracurricular education. Dienst was honorary professor for liturgy and hymnology at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main and honorary professor for liturgy, hymnology and practical theology at the University of Frankfurt .

Dienst was a long-time member of the Hessian Church History Association (HKV), whose yearbook he published from 1967 to 1993. On the occasion of his 65th birthday in 1995, the HKV dedicated a commemorative publication to him. He was also a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany , was rector of the German Institute for Education and Knowledge in Paderborn and second president of the Luther Society .

Karl Dienst was close to the confessional movement “No other gospel” , for whose information letter he also wrote regularly. He was also a member of the editorial team of the conservative homiletic-liturgical correspondence sheet - New Series . Furthermore, he belonged to the high church association of the Augsburg Confession and was temporarily its chairman.

As a student, Dienst joined the Mainz Wingolf in 1953 ; later he also became a member of the Giessener and Darmstadt Wingolf and the Arminia Dorpatensis.
